In a New Hampshire radio interview, she emphasized the importance of understanding the war’s relevance today, focusing on freedom and individual rights. Her response followed criticism of her initial comments at a New Hampshire town hall, where she attributed the war’s cause to government roles and economic freedom, omitting slavery.

Both Republicans and Democrats criticized her initial remarks, with figures like Rep. Byron Donalds and President Biden directly pointing to slavery as the Civil War’s cause. Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna called Haley’s initial avoidance of the slavery topic a betrayal of her own heritage.

Haley, in addressing the criticism, stressed the importance of freedom and individual rights, acknowledging slavery as a stain on American history. She currently competes closely with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in national polls for the Republican presidential nomination, trailing behind Trump.
