Former President Donald Trump has been confirmed on California’s March 5 primary ballot for the 2024 presidential contest. California, holding the largest number of delegates, has included Trump on the certified candidate list, despite political pressures.
California’s Secretary of State Shirley Weber faced calls to reject Trump’s candidacy, notably from Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, who in a December 20 letter urged Weber to consider legal means to remove Trump from the ballot. Weber, however, emphasized adherence to the rule of law, indicating that ballot challenges should be resolved in court.
This development in California contrasts with recent decisions in Maine and Colorado, where state officials and the Supreme Court, respectively, removed Trump from the GOP primary ballot. These states referenced a constitutional clause barring insurrectionists from holding office, relating to Trump’s actions surrounding the January 6 Capitol riots.
While these decisions can be appealed, many legal experts anticipate the U.S. Supreme Court will ultimately resolve the nationwide issue of Trump’s eligibility for the 2024 election ballot.
