In Tuesday’s U.S. school board elections, a number of conservative candidates, who advocated for restrictions on book content and classroom discussions on race and gender, did not secure the majority of seats. According to the American Federation of Teachers, approximately 80% of candidates supported by conservative organizations, including Moms For Liberty and the 1776 Project, were unsuccessful in their election bids on a national scale.
Specifically, in Pennsylvania and Iowa, voters did not favor school boards that had previously introduced policies affecting transgender students. In Pennsylvania, school boards witnessed a shift towards Democratic candidates who support LGBTQ+ inclusive policies. Similarly, in Iowa, candidates who received backing from Moms for Liberty did not win in districts that are recognized for advocating transgender student rights.
Despite these outcomes, conservative groups did see victories in certain regions. School boards in Texas and Minnesota, for instance, saw an increase in conservative representation.
