Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently ordered state universities to shut down chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), a pro-Palestinian student advocacy organization. This directive, issued on a Tuesday, marks the first instance in the United States where a state government has sought to disband a pro-Palestinian student group. DeSantis’ decision has sparked a debate over free speech rights and the legality of such actions. In his defense, DeSantis argued that the student group’s support for a foreign terrorist organization constitutes a violation of law, although this claim has been met with skepticism from various quarters.

Critics of the governor’s decision, including free speech advocacy groups, have slammed Florida’s attempt to break up these pro-Palestinian groups, questioning the legality and implications for free speech. The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations has been particularly vocal in this regard. DeSantis, however, has denied that his attempts to remove these groups from Florida university campuses violate free speech principles. He maintains that the actions are not an infringement of free speech rights.
