Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has withdrawn from the Republican presidential primary and endorsed former President Donald Trump. DeSantis, once viewed as a strong contender against Trump, announced his decision in a video message. Despite a commanding reelection as Florida governor, which contrasted with the performance of other Trump-endorsed Republicans nationwide, DeSantis struggled to establish himself in the presidential race.
Launching his campaign in May with seasoned GOP campaigners and a super PAC, DeSantis faced early challenges. Technical issues marred his Twitter Spaces launch, and his campaign style attracted criticism for being awkward. His lack of momentum was evident in the Iowa caucuses, where he secured only 21% of the votes against Trump’s 51%. With expectations of poor performance in New Hampshire and the rise of Nikki Haley as a significant Trump rival, DeSantis’s decision marks the end of his once-promising presidential campaign.
