In Burlington, near the University of Vermont, police have arrested Jason J. Eaton, 48, in connection with the shooting of three Palestinian-American students at a Thanksgiving gathering. The arrest, made by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, followed a search of Eaton’s apartment near the shooting site. The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, is being investigated as a potential hate crime. The victims, all 20 years old, were shot by a white male who fled after firing four rounds. Two victims were hit in the torso and one in the lower extremities, with two wearing Palestinian keffiyeh scarves.
Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger and Police Chief Jon Murad are set to discuss the case in a press conference. The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee suggests the attack was racially motivated. The FBI is actively involved in the investigation, and President Joe Biden has been briefed. A $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest or conviction has been offered by the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Various organizations and political leaders have condemned the attack and the rise of anti-Arab hate and Islamophobia.
