The Connecticut Appellate Court upheld a $75,000 fine against Alex Jones, a right-wing personality, for missing a deposition related to a lawsuit by Sandy Hook shooting victims’ families. Jones, who missed the March deposition claiming illness, was found by the court to have willfully skipped it while hosting his live show, Infowars. Despite Jones’ claim of suffering from vertigo and a possible serious heart condition, later identified as a sinus infection, the court ruled against his excuse.
Judge José Suarez noted that Jones’ actions contradicted his claim of being too ill for the deposition. Although Jones attended a deposition in Connecticut the next month and initially received a refund of the fine, the appellate court’s decision reaffirms the penalty. Jones’ lawyer, Norm Pattis, suggested a potential appeal to the Supreme Court, criticizing the court for overriding a doctor’s orders.
Pattis also argued that the contempt finding and fine by trial court Judge Barbara Bells were unjust, citing doctors’ statements about Jones’ illness. However, Alinor Sterling, representing the Sandy Hook families, dismissed Jones’ objections, emphasizing his deliberate breach of court orders and unjustified criticism of the judge.
