The House Oversight Committee issued subpoenas for Hunter Biden, his uncle James Biden, and other family members, including James’s wife Sarah Biden, Hunter’s wife Melissa Cohen, Hallie Biden, and Elizabeth Secundy. The committee is seeking depositions related to its impeachment inquiry. The subpoenas also extend to Hunter Biden’s former business partner Rob Walker and Tony Bobulinski, a figure accused by Hunter Biden’s attorney of lying to the FBI.
The subpoenas follow a request for personal bank records of Hunter and James Biden and are part of a broader investigation into allegations of influence peddling and financial benefits flowing to President Biden during his vice presidency. The White House has dismissed the subpoenas as part of a “smear campaign,” with oversight spokesperson Ian Sams criticizing the committee’s probe for lacking evidence of the alleged “high crimes and misdemeanors.”
Special counsel David Weiss, investigating Hunter Biden, affirmed his autonomy over the case, countering GOP claims of interference by Department of Justice leadership. The committee has examined financial transactions between the Biden family members, scrutinizing checks labeled as personal loans. Republicans suggest these transactions followed significant business dealings, while Democrats argue they reflect normal family lending practices.
The GOP has not demonstrated that President Biden directly benefited from his family’s business or made policy decisions influenced by them. The controversy includes President Biden’s past actions in Ukraine, specifically the removal of prosecutor Viktor Shokin, which Republicans claim was to protect his son’s interests. However, Biden’s actions were consistent with international efforts to address corruption in Ukraine, and there is no evidence of active prosecution against Burisma, the company associated with Hunter Biden, during Shokin’s tenure.
