Independent presidential candidate Cornel West expressed skepticism about President Joe Biden’s chances of continuing his reelection campaign. In a conversation with POLITICO, West suggested that Biden might unexpectedly withdraw from the race, similar to President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. He speculated about running against other Democrats, mentioning Gavin Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer, though Newsom has denied presidential aspirations.
West criticized Biden’s handling of various issues, from the Israel-Hamas conflict to economic matters. He also expressed concerns about Biden’s foreign policy and Trump’s domestic influence, describing Trump as a “Neo fascist” and Biden as a “milquetoast neoliberal.” Despite campaigning for Biden in 2020, West revealed he ultimately didn’t vote for him.
The Biden campaign did not comment on West’s statements, while Trump’s spokesperson dismissed West’s political efforts. West rejected the idea of being a spoiler in the election, arguing that his candidacy is legitimate.
West, who has shifted his political affiliation from the People’s Party to the Green Party, and then to an Independent, aims to appeal to young and disaffected voters. Despite personal challenges and a tainted record, West believes his diverse experiences make him a serious contender. He is currently polling at about 2.4 percent in a five-way race and has qualified for the ballot in Alaska, with plans to be on the ballot in at least 40 states.
