In a recent press conference, President Biden shared his perspective on the motivations behind the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel. He linked the attack to the progress in regional diplomacy, particularly with Saudi Arabia, under his administration’s efforts.

Biden stated, “I cannot prove what I’m about to say, but I believe one of the reasons why Hamas struck when they did was they knew that I was working very closely with the Saudis and others in the region to bring peace to the region by having recognition of Israel and Israel’s right to exist.”

The conflict, which began with Hamas militants killing approximately 1,200 people in border communities, led to a series of deadly airstrikes and an Israeli ground campaign in Gaza, resulting in thousands of Palestinian casualties.

Biden highlighted the warming relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel, fostered by U.S. diplomacy aimed at normalizing their relations. He suggested that an official recognition of Israel by Saudi Arabia was imminent before the attack.

This connection was previously mentioned by Biden at a campaign fundraiser last month.

During the press conference, which coincided with the start of a four-day truce and the release of 50 hostages held by Hamas, Biden also discussed his administration’s role in a major rail project planned at this year’s G20 Summit. The project, involving Israel, the UAE, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and other partners, aims to connect India to Europe via the Middle East.

Biden concluded, “The whole idea there’s overwhelming interest, and I think most Arab nations know that and are coordinating with one another to change the dynamic in their region for longer term peace. And that is what I’m going to continue to work on.”
