The Biden administration has authorized an emergency sale of approximately 14,000 rounds of tank ammunition, valued at over $106 million, to Israel amid escalating military operations in the southern Gaza Strip, as announced by the State Department on Saturday. This sale, notified to Congress late Friday, was expedited by Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s determination of an “emergency” that necessitates the immediate sale in the interest of U.S. national security.

This emergency decision allows the transaction to bypass the usual congressional review process for foreign military sales, a rare but not unprecedented action in situations deemed urgently requiring weapon delivery without congressional approval delay.

The State Department emphasized the United States’ commitment to Israel’s security, stating it is crucial for U.S. interests to aid Israel in developing and maintaining a robust self-defense capability. The department added, “Israel will use the enhanced capability as a deterrent to regional threats and to strengthen its homeland defense.”

The deal, valued at $106.5 million, includes 13,981 120 mm High Explosive Anti-Tank Multi-Purpose with Tracer tank cartridges, along with accompanying U.S. support, engineering, and logistics services.
