Funding for the Wuhan Institute of Virology has been suspended and may be cut off by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This is due to concerns about biosafety violations and non-compliance with US regulations.
The institute has received over $1.4 million in federal awards since 2014, but has not obtained any new funding since July 2020.
The US government has taken this step while investigations into the origins of Covid-19 continue. There are suspicions that the virus may have originated at the Wuhan lab, although no conclusive evidence has been found. However, significant breaches in safety and security protocols have been identified.
