Federal Judge Robert Hinkle scrutinized Florida’s ban on medical treatments for transgender minors and restrictions on adult transgender health care. The law, advocated by Gov. Ron DeSantis, has been challenged for targeting transgender individuals under the guise of public safety. Hinkle questioned the state’s lawyer, Mohammad Jazil, about the governor’s statements alleging mutilation in treatments, noting no documented cases of such.

Jazil defended the law, stating it aims for safety and oversight in medical treatments with lasting effects, denying any targeting of transgender people. He argued that if targeting were the intent, the law would have banned all treatments for adults and children.

Judge Hinkle, appointed by former President Bill Clinton, temporarily blocked the law’s enforcement regarding minors, pending the trial’s outcome. The lawsuit also contests adult trans care restrictions, which are currently in effect.

These laws have faced various legal challenges, including in Arkansas, where a federal judge overturned a similar ban. The Florida law is part of a broader pattern of legislation affecting the transgender community, including school pronoun usage restrictions, gender identification teaching, bathroom access, and participation of trans girls in sports.
