In response to the ongoing war in Ukraine, President Joe Biden has authorized the military to activate reservists and increase its presence in Europe. Through an executive order, Biden stated that this decision aims to enhance the effectiveness of Operation Atlantic Resolve within the United States European Command’s area of responsibility.
Operation Atlantic Resolve was established to strengthen the presence of U.S. troops in Europe and support the defense of NATO allies following Russia’s unlawful annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.
Under the president’s order, the total number of called-up soldiers cannot exceed 3,000 at any given time. Among these, only 450 individuals from the individual ready reserve mobilization category will be summoned. The individual ready reserve category includes trained soldiers who have recently left active duty but still have a contractual obligation to their respective branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. It also encompasses those who have transitioned from active duty to a reserve component but have not yet been assigned to a specific unit.
According to the Defense Department, since the start of the war in Ukraine last February, an additional 20,000 forces have been deployed in Europe, bringing the total number of American service members in the region to over 100,000.
