According to Save the Children (NGO), more children have been killed in Gaza during Israel’s three-week conflict with Hamas than in all global conflicts combined for each of the last three years. The Hamas-controlled Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that 8,005 Palestinians, including 3,324 children, have been killed since the conflict began on October 7. These numbers exceed the U.N. figures for child casualties in 24 countries: 2,985 in 2022, 2,515 in 2021, and 2,674 in 2020. Jason Lee, Save the Children’s country director in the occupied Palestinian territory, described the situation as “harrowing.”
Over 6,000 children have also been injured, and the healthcare system in Gaza is near collapse. The World Health Organization reported that 34% of Gaza’s hospitals are non-functional, and 64% of primary care clinics are closed. Save the Children has called for an immediate ceasefire to protect the children and youth of Gaza.
