During a phone call with former Nigerien leader Mahamadou Issoufou and Mohamed Bazoum, the ousted leader of Niger, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken voiced his support for Bazoum. Blinken also warned that detaining Bazoum could put at risk hundreds of millions of dollars in assistance to Niamey.
In response to the coup in Niger, French President Emmanuel Macron will preside over a defense meeting. With 1,500 troops stationed in Niger, France views the country as a critical ally in the Sahel region. Macron condemned the coup and called for the immediate release of Bazoum.
