A group of writers, including James Patterson, Suzanne Collins, and Margaret Atwood, have recently signed an open letter from the Authors Guild. The letter urges AI companies, such as OpenAI, Meta, and Microsoft, to obtain permission before using copyrighted work in their technologies.
The guild stresses that AI technology relies heavily on the vast amount of books, articles, essays, and poetry that have already been created, and that fair compensation is necessary for creators to continue producing new content.
The guild also points out that while AI can draw from existing human stories, it cannot replicate the unique creativity of human writers.
