GOP Rep. Gohmert Grills FBI Director For Not Calling Jan. 6 ‘Basically Peaceful’

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) on Thursday questioned why Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray has not characterized the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol as “basically peaceful,” the latest instance of a House Republican seeking to downplay the attack.

Gohmert claimed Wray was “careful to note” that last summer’s racial justice protests were “basically peaceful,” adding that Wray “hasn’t said that about the 100 to 200,000 people that showed up on Jan. 6.”

Gohmert asked Wray how many people “actually came into the Capitol on Jan. 6 that were unauthorized,” to which Wray responded that around 500 people have been arrested for the attack.

Wray replied that he splits the Jan. 6 protesters into three groups “almost like an inverse pyramid”: peaceful protesters; those charged with minor crimes like trespassing; and those who “brought all sorts of weapons” or are facing otherwise “significant charges.”

Wray used an almost identical breakdown to describe the racial justice protests last year, differentiating in a September Senate hearing between peaceful protesters; “criminal opportunists” like looters; and those who targeted law enforcement and federal buildings.
