President Trump said he is canceling the Jacksonville, Fla., portion of the coming Republican National Convention, citing increasing coronavirus cases in the state, as health worries continue to upend traditional election-year events.
Mr. Trump had been eager to hold a splashy convention and had hoped to continue despite the pandemic.
Mr. Trump said in June that he would move much of the convention out of Charlotte, citing frustrations that the state’s governor couldn’t guarantee that the event could take place there at full capacity.
Republicans later announced that many convention events would take place in Jacksonville.
Republican officials were struggling to figure out a way to safely hold the convention and had discussed plans to conduct some events outside.
