U.S. workers continued to seek unemployment assistance last week at historically elevated levels, with 1.5 million new applications filed, the Labor Department reported.

The continued influx of claims for jobless benefits more than three months into the pandemic is raising doubt among some economists that the U.S. will experience a rapid recovery. However, the number who are continuing to seek the payments continues to decline as workers return to their jobs.
